Madonsela - And The World Takes Note - November 2014
Thuli Madonsela, is a South African advocate and the nation's public protector who helped draft the country's constitution in 1994. This courageous woman has stood firm as she fulfils her mandate to strengthen constitutional democracy and promote good governance. Her work ethic and dedication to truth has created increasing public awareness, not only awareness of who she is but also of the crucial role she plays in our democracy.
The recognition of both her role and her strength have been mounting, to the point where we have seen the entire world take note.
- Time Magazine has named her one of the world's 100 Most Influential People this year;
- Transparency International honoured Madonsela with the International Integrity Award for 2014,
- Forbes Africa have listed her as one of five nominees for their Person of the Year Award and to ensure she wins this award we encourage all to cast your vote for Thuli here.
Locally we have seen a flood of South African organisations and individuals pledging their support - from the Press Club naming her Newsmaker of the Year to The Public Relations Institute Presidents Award and the Rotary Club of Johannesburg having given her their highest international award. The Durban North Rotary Club will be holding a banquet on the 20th November at the ICC, Durban, to present her with a lifetime award. We extend this invitation to the people of KwaZulu-Natal to honour Thuli, who is a woman leading her team with courage, integrity, honesty and humility.

#WeThePeople – Support our Public Protector
The movement Together SA has created a social media platform and initiated an Online March to stand alongside the Public Protector and her team. The campaign is called #WeThePeople – Support our Public Protector where individual South Africans can voice their support for Madonsela by pledging a tweet or Facebook message. The Online March will culminate on 18 November where social media will be flooded with messages of support for the Public Protector.
Together SA also joined internationally renowned street artist, Gasak, in the township of Inanda to paint a 3m portrait in support of Thuli Madonsela and her team. Inanda is the place where Nelson Mandela cast the first democratic vote 20 years ago and where Lulu Dube lives, the daughter of John Dube, who was the founding member and first president of the ANC. When the painting was destroyed, it highlighted the fact that there is great misunderstanding around the role of the Public Protector. Her role is not a political one. The role of the Public Protector is to sustain and promote our democracy and so it is critical for us South Africans to create awareness and support for our Public Protector. The Together SA team captured Gasak painting the portrait of Thuli on video, check it out here.
Desmond Tutu once said "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor".
Madonsela stands for justice; she stands with courage, integrity and for our democracy. Now is the time to stand alongside her and her team.
